Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Celebrations at Consulate General of India, Hambantota – 9th January 2017

The Consulate General of India, Hambantota celebrated 14th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Celebrations on 9th January 2017. Floral tribute was paid at the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi by the Vice Consul (Admn.) and other senior officials of the Post. Local community and Sri Lankan friends of India were also paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, Father of the Nation the Library Hall in Consulate General of India, Hambantota. The Vice Consul (Admn.) in his speech said that it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi, the 'Sarva Shreshtha Pravasi Bharatiya', returned to India from South Africa, led India's freedom struggle and changed the lives of Indians forever. The PBD have been an extremely useful platform for the people and the Government of India to renew and strengthen the bonds with the Indian diaspora. He also said that the Indian Diaspora today constitutes an important, and in some respects unique, force in world culture. In the past couple of decades, it has grown into an energetic and confident community of over 25 million that has given India a presence in many parts of the world. The documentary film ‘Pravasi Bharatiya Divas 2017’ was also screened to mark the event.   The event lasted for 1 hour. Few pictures taken during the event are enclosed. N.B.
