Celebrating 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

 

Consulate General of India, Hambantota has been actively organizing various programs and activities over last two years as a part of celebrating the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. This year we are celebrating the grand finale of 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. As part of the activities, Consulate General of India Hambantota had organized Galle District Inter-School Painting Competition, Tree Planation activity at Maragal and Screening of “Gandhi” Movie at Gawri Tamil Vidyalaya & Wellachci Kade, Maduruketiya.

As the inaugural event, Galle District Inter-School Painting competition was held on 28th September 2020 at Siridhamma College Galle. About 30 students from different schools representing Galle, Udugama, Ambanlangoda & Elpitiya education zones actively took part in the competition. Prizes & Trophies were awarded to the winners by the Consul General Mr. Dipin P.R, Pincipal of Siridhamma College Mr. Ravindra pushpakumara and Vice Consul Mr. Atul Aggarwal. 

On the 30th September 2020the Consulate organized a Tree Plantation activity at Monaragala District with the support of Monaragala Pradeshiya Sabha, Sri Gawry Tamil Vidyalaya and Environmental Society of Kumbukkana Pragnaloka Vidyalaya. 150 tree saplings were planted at the during the tree plantation ceremony. Along with the tree plantation a film screening was held on the same day at Sri Gawry Tamil Vidyalaya, for the teachers and students of the School. Another screening of the same movie was done on 3rd October at Wellachci Kade, Maduruketiya for Monaragala community

 On 2nd October 2020 Celebration of Gandhi Jayanthi was held at Mahinda College, Galle where Bapu visited in 1927 during his journey to Sri Lanka. Consul General paid the tribute to the Mahatma Gandhi by garlanding the Bust of Gandhiji. On the same day a book containing compilation of articles, paintings & poems by students of Mahinda College was launched by Consul General Mr. Dipin P.R and Principal of Mahinda College Mr. Gamini Jayawardena.

It was scheduled to stage a Sinhala adapted stage drama titled Mahatma@Gandhi.Com on 06th October 2020 at Rabindranath Tagore Memorial Auditorium in collaboration with University of Ruhuna and a Peace March at Hambantota District on 09th October 2020 to spread Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals among local public. However due to the sudden surge of Corona Virus outbreak Consulate decided to postpone these events considering the safety and health concerns of general public.
