8th International Day of Yoga in Southern
Province & Monaragala District
Consulate
General of India in Hambantota organized a series of events from 15th to
24th June 2022 under post jurisdiction. i.e. Galle, Matara, Hambantota &
Monaragala Districts. to mark the
8th International Day of Yoga 2022. Programmes organized by the Consulate this year
included four yoga events at Galle, Matara, Hambantota & Monataragala
Districts & also a Yoga Conference in Hambantota District on the theme of
“Yoga for Body & Mind” to create awareness on the benefits of Yoga in
reducing stress and counter the ill- effects of modern day lifestyle diseases.
02. The curtain raiser event of CGI
Hambantota for the 8th International Day of Yoga celebration was held at Matara
beach park on 15th June 2022 with the participation of the students
of St. Mary Convent, Matara, Mahamaya Girls School, Matara , officials of
Matara Chamber of Commerce & local Yoga enthusiasts.
03. The second event of IDY2022 was
organized at Hambantota Beach Park on 17th June 2022 from 7.30 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. with the
participation of Hambantota local community. The participants included
officials of the Post, students of Tzu-Chi National School, Hambantota, Zahira
College Hambantota, officials of Hambantota Chamber of Commerce & Municipal
council
04. As a part of celebrating 8th
International Day of Yoga CGI Hambantota organized a Yoga conference on the
theme of " Yoga for Body & Mind" at Hambantota Jade Green Hotel
on 23rd June 2022. Prof. R.S Jayawardena, Dr. Ruwan Raigamkorala,
renowned ayurvedic experts shared their expertise about how Yoga combined with
ayurveda can do wonders for the longevity of human life. Doctors & Nursing
staff of Hambantota General Hospital, Ayurveda Hospital, Ambalantota Base
Hospital, Officials of Hambantota Municipal Council, Chamber of Commerce
participated the conference with great enthusiasm.
05. A mega public event under the theme
“Yoga for Humanity” was organized at UNESCO World Heritage Galle Fort from 7.30
am onwards to mark the Day. The Event was participated by many dignitaries such
as Ministry Secretary of Southern Provincial Ministry of Sports & Culture
Mr. Bimal I De Silva , Ministry Secretary of Southern Provincial Ministry of
Agriculture & Mr. A.U Welarathne, Commanding Officer of Koggala Air Force
Camp Gp. Capt. Thilina Rajapaksha &
Officials of SL Navy, SL Air
Force & SL Police. Aurveda Doctors of Galle District Ayurveda Hospitala ,
Students of Vidyaloka College, Galle & local yoga enthusiasts also joined
the celebration.
06. Last 8th IDY Celebration event was
organized at Monaragala Royal College Play Ground on 24th June 2022 with the
participation of school children of
Monaragala District. The event was participated by many schools in
Monaragala such as Monaragala Royal College,
Vipulananda Tamil Vidyalaya, Sri Shanmuha Tamin Vidyalaya, Sri Gauri
Tamil Vidyalaya, Saraswathi Tamil Vidyalaya & Aliyawatta Tamil Secondary
School.
07. Yoga, like Ayurveda, forms a part of
shared heritage of India and Sri Lanka.Indian diplomatic offices in Sri Lanka
have been celebrating International Day of Yoga with the participation of the
Sri Lankan leadership and public since 2015 with great fervour. Average
footfall for the event over the years has been in thousands. There was also
enthusiastic participation at the virtual events held in 2020 and 2021, when
there were restrictions in conducting physical events due to COVID-19.
