The Consulate
General of India in Hambantota organized a grand celebration of the 10th
International Day of Yoga (IDY) at the UNESCO Heritage Galle Fort. The event
was graced by Mr. Sumith Alahakoon, Chief Secretary of the Southern Province,
as the Guest of Honor.
2. The
theme for this year’s International Day of Yoga was
"Yoga for Self and Society," highlighting the transformative power of
yoga in fostering individual well-being and societal harmony. This event
propagated the theme by emphasizing the collective benefits of yoga practices
in promoting physical, mental, and spiritual health among diverse groups within
the community.
3. Several
dignitaries attended the celebration, including Mr. W A Dharmasiri, District
Secretary of Galle District; Mr. Bimal De Silva, Secretary of the Ministry of
Sports & Cultural Affairs; and Mr. A.U Welarathne, Secretary of the
Ministry of Agriculture. Their presence underscored the significant support and
recognition of yoga’s role in enhancing overall health and
societal well-being.
4. The
event commenced with a warm welcome speech by Shri Harvinder Singh, Consul
General of India in Hambantota. He emphasized the global significance of yoga
as a holistic practice that unites physical, mental, and spiritual well-being,
reflecting the essence of the IDY 2024 theme.
5. More
than 400 yoga enthusiasts gathered for the celebration, including officials
from the Southern Provincial Ministry Complex, officers from the Sri Lankan
Army 2nd Volunteer Battalion of Gamunu Watch, Navy officers from SLNS Dakshina
and SLNS Nipuna, Air Force officers from Koggala Air Force Base, commissioners,
officials, and children from the Southern Provincial Department of Probation,
as well as principals, teachers, and students from various schools and yoga
studios in Galle.
