Celebrating 150th Birth
Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi
Consulate General of
India, Hambantota organized series of events in Southern Province and
Monaragala District to commemorate 150th Birth Anniversary of
Mahatma Gandhi. One of the activities, unveiling of Mahatma Gandhi’s bust was
held at Mahinda College Galle on 04th November 2019. The venue of
the event was significant as Mahatma Gandhi had visited Mahinda College, Galle
on 23rd November 1927 during his tour of Sri Lanka from 12-29th
November 1927.

Gunasekara, Governor Southern Province, Hon. Vajira Abeywardhane, Minister of
Internal and Home Affairs, Mr. Prem Kumar Nair, Consul General of India –
Hambantota, Mr. Bandula Harishchandra, District Secretary, Hambantota, Mr.
Gamini Jayawardhane, Principal of Mahinda College, Mr. S.M.I R B Abeyrathna,
Assistant Director of Education, SPED, Principals from Southern Province and
Monaragala district and many other distinguished guests graced the occasion.
Parallel to the above
event the Consulate organized a Photo exhibition of Mahatma Gandhi’s life at
Mahinda College, Galle on same day. Award ceremony and Final Round of the quiz
competition were also held at the main hall of the college. Around 600
students, teachers from various schools in Southern province and Monaragala
District witnessed the event. Winners of the above event were awarded with cash
prizes, gifts and certificates.
